In July's edition of our community newsletter we mark a major sustainability milestone, celebrate graduation season, and highlight how our students and staff are making a difference locally.
As our congregation ceremonies get underway, we’re celebrating not only our students but also some very special honorary graduates.
Award-winning actors Mark Gatiss and Gina McKee are among the notable figures joining us at Durham Cathedral this July to receive honorary degrees for their outstanding contributions to the arts.
We’re also proud to highlight the efforts of our staff who help build strong community links.
Andrea Cairns, our Senior Events and Customer Services Manager, has been awarded the Good Citizen of the Year award by the City of Durham Parish Council.
The award recognises her tireless work on community events such as Lumiere and the Durham Christmas Festival.
Our long-running Green Move Out scheme is once again in full swing. Now in its 22nd year, it helps students donate unwanted items as they leave their Durham accommodation at the end of the academic year.
These donations go to the County Durham Furniture Help Scheme, supporting people in need across the region.
Sustainability remains a key priority for us, and we’ve reached a major milestone with solar panels now installed on over 30 University buildings.
Together, these panels will generate nearly 1,000,000 kWh of electricity each year - enough to power an electric vehicle around the world more than 120 times - while also supplying low-carbon energy back to the local grid.
This month’s newsletter also showcases a wide range of free exhibitions and events open to all.
From the Festival of Archaeology and the National Astronomy Meeting to storytelling-themed exhibitions at Palace Green Library and the Oriental Museum, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
You’ll also find Durham researchers taking their work to new audiences, including stand-up comedy at local fringe festivals and insights into baby sleep and galaxy evolution.
