Children engaging with science experiments

Our annual Celebrate Science festival is back this October half term, and for the first time, it’s pulling into a new venue at Locomotion railway museum in Shildon, part of the Science Museum Group.

The family-friendly event runs on Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 October 2025, from 10am to 4pm, offering two days packed with discovery, creativity, and hands-on science fun. Entry is free,  but we are expecting this to be a busy event, so we are asking visitors to pre-book timed admission slots.

Now in its 14th year, Celebrate Science brings together interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and experiments led by Durham University scientists, students, and local school ambassadors.

Visitors can explore space in the planetarium, create mini volcanoes, test wind turbines, and discover how the human body works. School Science Ambassadors will also lead fun activities such as launching paper rockets, exploring static electricity, and building model planets.

Celebrate Science will look at big questions and uncover amazing answers: Why does it go dark at night? How big is the Universe? What can our senses tell us about the world? And how can we take better care of ourselves and our planet?

The festival is delivered by Durham University in partnership with Locomotion, Beamish Museum, the Institute of Physics, Newcastle University, Northumbria University, the North Pennines National Landscape, Orsted, Livin, the ESRC Festival of Social Science, and the Reece Foundation.

Join the celebration at Locomotion this October half term and experience the excitement of science in action.
