Celebrate Science 2025, a partnership between Durham University and Locomotion (part of the Science Museum Group), welcomed more than 5,000 people to Locomotion in Shildon for two days of hands-on science activities, live demonstrations and interactive exhibits.
With support from Livin, the ESRC Festival of Social Science and The Reece Foundation, the event aimed to make science fun and accessible for all ages.
Feedback from visitors was very positive. Many described the day as “amazing”, with one attendee highlighting their grandchildren’s excitement about virtual reality, archaeology and volcanoes. Visitors appreciated the variety of hands-on challenges, from building K’nex bridges to crafting paper structures. One family said: “The boys would have stayed all day!”.
Children left with new ideas and stories to share at home and school.
Thanks to the support of our partners and volunteers, Celebrate Science continues to be a key event in the region’s science calendar, encouraging young people to explore, ask questions, and discover the world around them.
