Congratulations to recent IAS Fellow, Professor Donald Dingwell from the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, who has been elected as Fellow of the Royal Society.
In early 2021, Professor Dingwell undertook a 'virtual' Fellowship with the Institute to collaborate with Dr Fabian Wadsworth from Durham's Earth Sciences on a project entitled 'Quantifying the Global Risk of Volcanic Eruptions to the Airline Industry' which considered the problem of volcanic eruptions in the context of global flight paths.
Professor Dingwell’s expertise lies in the physics of magma as a material, and dynamics of eruptions including, in particular, the processes involved in the generation of volcanic ash. He has contributed largely to the development of the new and expanding field of experimental volcanology.
