Bionow Award

Nevrargenics Ltd have won the 2025 Bionow Project of the Year Award in the annual Bionow awards at the Concorde Conference Centre in Manchester. The award recognised their lead programme Ellorarxine™ as one of the most innovative and impactful life sciences projects in the UK.

Bionow Project of the Year 2025

The winning project is led by the Nevrargenics team based in Durham under CEO Professor Andy Whiting, and brings together researchers from the Universities of Aberdeen, Liverpool, and King’s College London. Nevrargenics Ltd, is a spin‑out company from Durham University, with strong ties to the Biophysical Sciences Community – such as Prof. Andy Whiting (CEO) and Prof. Ehmke Pohl, current Director of the Biophysical Sciences Institute, who serves as the company’s Chief Scientific Officer.

New Approaches to Treating Motor Neurone Disease

Nevrargenics focuses on the development of Retinoic Acid Receptor Modulators (RARMs), a novel class of compounds with potential applications in healthy ageing and in treating neurodegenerative disorders. The company continues to advance its research and development pipeline, supporting the region’s growing strengths in neuroscience and translational medicine.

At the awards event the judges highlighted Nevrargenics’ "major step forward" in neurodegenerative research, particularly their novel RARβ-modulator approach to treating Motor Neurone Disease (MND/ALS). The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has now approved the clinical protocol to assess Ellorarxine™ in ALS/FTD—conditions for which effective disease‑modifying therapies remain limited.

This award marks recognition of the pioneering work of Nevrargenics and underscores the impact of Durham‑based innovation in the life sciences and neurodegeneration fields.
