Upper Mountjoy

The BSI is moving into the redeveloped Mountjoy Centre. This represents a step change for the institute, an opportunity to build upon the sense of community that makes the BSI special. While the location may be new, the focus remains the same: a collegial approach to building collaboration and innovation.

BSI's New Home at the Re-Developed Mountjoy
For the first time in its near 20-year history, the Biophysical Sciences Institute (BSI) is soon to have a physical home. The move to the redeveloped Mountjoy Centre represents a landmark moment for our research community. It is the result of years of hard work by BSI Directors, and a huge credit to the current Director Prof. Ehmke Pohl, who has delivered the vision of the BSI as a physical hub for the community.
"Moving into this new dedicated space on a shared floor with other University Research Institutes gives us an opportunity to build on and extend our unique, cross-disciplinary research culture"
The move into physical space represents a step change for the institute, the increase in opportunities for stimulating collaboration and building upon the sense of community that makes the BSI special. While the location may be new, the focus remains the same: a collegial approach to building collaboration across disciplines to tackle complex scientific questions and drive innovation.
The new space in the Mountjoy Centre has hot desks for the BSI community, shared break‑out areas and flexible working spaces which give researchers places to meet, think and plan together. Currently to book these spaces in the early phases (available from end of February) - please email the BSI Manager (bsi.manager@durham.ac.uk).
The Start of a New Chapter
To mark the start of this new chapter, the Institute will co‑host its first event in Mountjoy on 23 February 2026—a joint BSI, WRI and Applied Mathematics seminar featuring Dr Joshua Bull (University of Oxford).
This cross‑disciplinary event reflects the collaborative spirit the Institute aims to foster in its new surroundings.
As this new phase for the Biophysical Sciences community begins, it presents a chance to build on our strengths — the Mountjoy Centre will give a focal point to start new conversations, stimulate new ideas and grow.
