To support students and staff at our partner university in Zaporizhja, CSU Deputy Director Zhanna Kozmenko-Ihssen launched a series of online English Speaking Clubs in 2025. These initiatives aim not only to strengthen English‑language skills and promote cultural exchange and dialogue between our academic communities, but above all to support students and staff at Zaporizhzhia National University on the war frontline. We always welcome volunteers among Durham students and colleagues.
Students’ English Speaking Club
Meets weekly on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings. Sessions focus on interactive discussions around topics that are interesting and relevant for students on both sides, encouraging genuine cultural exchange. The club is supported by student volunteers who co‑organise sessions and help moderate discussions.
Academics’ English Speaking Club
Takes place once a month (Tuesday or Wednesday, 4-5 pm) and follows a slightly different format. A member of staff from Durham gives an accessible overview of their research field, followed by Q&A or open discussion. Topics are chosen to appeal broadly to academic colleagues at our partner university.
If you would like to know more or would like to take part in either initiative, please get in touch. Please feel free to adjust the information above and pass it on to your students:
