Undelimited Maritime Boundaries of the Asian Rim in the Pacific Ocean

Abstract

The second of a two part series, this Briefing provides a systematic review of 20 undelimited maritime boundaries in the seas and gulfs lying between the mainland of Asia and the chain of archipelagos stretching from Indonesia to Japan via the Philippines and Taiwan. For each potential delimitation the analysis notes the status of each country and the types of marine regimes that might eventually be separated by a delimited boundary. The line of equidistance related to all appropriate basepoints is noted. Consideration is also given to the possible creation of inequitable maritime boundaries using a line of equidistance.

Additionally, the authors take into account all relevant dispute (including disputes over rocks and islands) throughout the region and their subsequent effects on future boundary delimitation. Comprehensively-researched, this Briefing gives a clear impression of how the undelimited boundaries in this large and influential region might look in years to come.
