The Institute for Medical Humanities at Durham University warmly invites Durham Postgraduate Research (PGR) students to participate in a PhD Showcase afternoon celebrating the diversity and creativity of research in the medical humanities.

This event will take place on Thursday 11 June 2026, 12.30–5.30pm, in the Atrium at the Institute for Medical Humanities.

This friendly and informal event offers a space for Durham University postgraduate research students to share ideas, test new work, and connect with other researchers working across disciplines related to medicine, health, and the humanities.

The day will involve creative facilitation, and lunch, coffee breaks and a buffet dinner are provided.

Presentations can explore any topic related to the medical humanities, broadly understood. Work-in-progress, experimental approaches, and creative formats are very welcome. We welcome submissions from postgraduate research students across disciplines whose research connects with the medical humanities, including (but not limited to):

  • Literature and narrative medicine
  • History of medicine
  • Philosophy and ethics of healthcare
  • Arts and health
  • Anthropology or sociology of medicine
  • Disability studies
  • Cultural studies of illness and care
  • Interdisciplinary approaches to mental health
  • Engaged research
  • Technologies of healthcare
  • Environmental impacts of health

Participants are invited to give short papers presented in one of two formats:

  • Keyword presentation – speak for around 10 minutes using a small set of keywords, as well as a Powerpoint principally focused on images, as prompts.
  • A more traditional presentation of around 15 mins.

The main objective of the event is that of creating a relaxed environment where postgraduate researchers can exchange ideas and receive friendly, constructive feedback.
