***Please note that although this workshop is free, you will be required to provide your own materials. If you do not already own them, these can be bought from retailers for approximately £20. A list of required materials can be found below.***

In this day and half medieval calligraphy workshop we will learn the shapes and strokes of the Caroline Minuscule script, which rose in the period known for the reign of king and emperor Charlemagne (768-814). After learning about the historical and palaeographical context of the script, we will start practicing letterforms using tools of the trade like calligraphy nib pens. Once familiar with the script, we will work with digitised Durham manuscripts, which will serve as a model for copying pieces of text that will become our final project. No previous knowledge needed.

The workshop will be led by Claudia Sánchez de la Iglesia, researcher in the ERC project People and Writing at the University of Salamanca (Spain). Her research focuses on the education and ability of Early Medieval scribes through the integration of Palaeography and Calligraphy. Claudia completed her studies in History and Research at the University of Salamanca, and honed her Calligraphy and illumination expertise with Esperanza Serrano, Esther Gordo. Scriptorium Yayyan and Andrés Antón.

This workshop is co-organised by Dr Manuel Muñoz, Lecturer in Latin Palaeography at IMEMS.
