Looking back at 10 years of CRiVA

Nicole Westmarland and Simon Hackett led the violence and abuse theme within the Department of Sociology (formerly the School of Applied Social Sciences) from 2006 to 2013 before CRiVA was launched as a multi-disciplinary research centre.

In 10 years, we have achieved a lot, together. Take a look at some of our highlights below.

CRiVA was launched

In 2013, CRiVA was launched, co-founded by Professor Nicole Westmarland and Professor Simon Hackett.

House of Commons and House of Lords Special Advisor

In 2014, Dr Nicole Westmarland was appointed Special Advisor for an inquiry into violence against women and girls.

Between 2009-2015, award winning project Mirabal investigated domestic violence perpetrator programmes in the UK.

In 2019, Professor Geetanjali Gangoli received the Outstanding Paper Award for her paper titled 'Perception and barriers: reporting female genital mutilation'.
