In 2019, the International Classification of Diseases, 11th revision (ICD-11) called for a systematic and comprehensive classification and staging of ageing-related pathologies at the metabolic, tissue, organ and systemic levels. It was recommended that such a classification system should be adopted by the ICD, to guide policy and practice and to enable appropriate clinical guidance, systems, resources, and infrastructure.
To this end, the International Consortium to Classify Ageing-Related Pathology (ICCARP) was established , by the Cardiff Metropolitan University, consisting of 16 international working groups, from 14 different countries around the world, to develop these classification and staging systems. The first consensus meeting of ICCARP to define an Ageing-Related Pathology was held in Cardiff earlier this year. The criteria defined will be used by this new International Consortium, including WRIHW Fellow, Professor Paul Chazot, as a benchmark to initially classify, and subsequently stage, all known ageing-related pathologies. Watch this space for the criteria which were accepted, soon to be published by the consortium. Professor Chazot will be attending the next meeting this month to begin the specific definition of the Ageing-Related Neuropathology consensus.
