Staff profile

I am a first year PhD student in the Department of Sociology researching male violence against women with a specific focus on domestic violence and abuse. I started my PhD in June 2022 and I am a part-time student. I graduated from the University of York in 2011 after completing an undergraduate law degree. After my undergraduate degree I complete a PGCE at the University of Huddersfield and began teaching law and criminology in Further Education institutions around Yorkshire. After several years teaching I decided to return to education and completed the Legal Practice Course and a Masters in Law programme part-time, before going to work in the legal sector. However, I soon realised that my passion was for academia rather than legal practice and so I returned to teaching, but this time in the Higher Education sector. Alongside my PhD I am still teaching and currently hold the position of Lecturer in Law at Leeds Beckett University. 

Research Area

My research centres around the concept of ‘justice’ from the perspective of a victim-survivor of domestic violence and abuse. As part of my thesis, I aim to critically analyse the role of criminal law in cases of domestic violence and abuse, and by drawing on feminist perspectives I aim to explore how well the criminal justice system meets the needs of the victim-survivors. My research is supervised by Professor Nicole Westmarland and Professor Clare McGlynn QC (Hon).
