Biography

My name is Fernanda Chacón Onetto, and I am a PhD researcher at the Centre for Research into Violence and Abuse (CRiVA) in the Department of Sociology. I hold a Master’s degree in Sociology from Lancaster University (UK), funded by Becas Chile, one of the main scholarship programmes of the Chilean government, and a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Universidad Arturo Prat in Iquique, Chile.

My research and professional experience focus on gender, violence, and migration. I have worked as a consultant and researcher in these areas and have collaborated with several university gender equality units to identify and address institutional gender disparities.

PhD Research

My doctoral research project examines how change happens for some men in a Domestic Violence Perpetrator Programme (DVPP) in Chile, situating this process within the broader context of the country’s social policy design and implementation. The study adopts a case study design and employs qualitative mixed methods incorporating ethnographic elements. Fieldwork involved six months of observations and semi-structured interviews with a wide range of stakeholders, including DVPP practitioners, women’s support centre staff, programme participants, and key informants.

The thesis raises important questions about the role, preparedness, and influence of practitioners, emphasising the crucial part they play in facilitating change, as well as the significance of the theoretical frameworks underpinning these programmes. It also explores the interconnection between men’s resistance and shame within the context of intervention.
