Biography

Dr. Ishraga Osman is a Research Fellow at Durham University’s Department of Engineering, funded by a CARA Fellowship. Her research applies machine learning and AI to study climate change impacts on river flows and sediment transport, working collaboratively across interdisciplinary teams at Durham and internationally.

Dr. Osman obtained her PhD from Wageningen University and UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education in the Netherlands, where her thesis examined the impact of improved operation and maintenance on cohesive sediment transport in irrigation canals. She also holds an MSc in Water Resources Engineering and a BSc (Hons) in Civil Engineering from the University of Khartoum, Sudan.

Previously, she served as Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Khartoum—the first woman to hold the post since 1939. She has experience in teaching, research, and consultancy in water resources and civil engineering, with numerous international collaborations and publications, including a book with CRC Press. She also served as Assistant Professor and Lecturer in Civil Engineering, University of Khartoum (top University in Sudan) with teaching and research spanning irrigation and drainage, hydrological modelling, sediment transport, climate change and river engineering. She has received research grants and fellowships from NUFFIC, IFS, and Sudan’s Ministry of Higher Education, among others. Her consultancy and applied research have contributed to national and regional projects addressing climate change, river morphology, and water management.
