Biography

Jane has worked at Durham University since 2011.  She is Director of the Master of Social Work Programme and Director of Postgraduate Taught Programmes in the Department of Sociology.   

Jane convenes the Year 1 MSW module 'Social Work in Context', the Year 2 MSW modules ‘Advanced Social Work’ and 'Social Work Practice Placement 2' and co-convenes the CPD Practice Education Stage 1 and Stage 2 Modules. 

Jane qualified as a social worker in 2006, completing the Master of Social Work Programme at Durham with Distinction and also has a Degree in Sociology and an MA in Research Methods (Social Work) with Distinction. Jane has undertaken doctoral research into homeless young peoples’ participation in the planning and delivery of services for children in need. Jane has previously worked for Barnardos as a qualified social worker and has experience of statutory social work with children and families and support work with adults with physical disabilities. She has also worked as a researcher for the PSSRU looking into extra care housing for older people, with Stockton Borough Council to assist with the development of their parenting strategy and worked on various university research projects, including ‘The Virtuous Patient’, a multi-disciplinary research project into chronic illness. Her research interests include service user participation, children’s rights and participatory research methodologies.
