Staff profile

Ying is a full-time PhD Candidate at Durham Law School. She obtained her LL.M. by Research Degree at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics and her LL.B. in Law at Zhejiang Gongshang University. In 2016, She visited Göteborgs universitet(Sweden) as an exchange student. Ying is also a qualified civil lawyer in China.Ying’s research interest is in intellectual property law, specifically focusing on Artificial Intelligence(AI) and copyright law. Her doctoral research explores the copyright issues of AI-generated works. As the number of works generated by AI increases, challenges arise in deciding whether AI-generated works should be protected by copyright law and how they are to be protected by copyright law. Her research revisits the fundamental concepts of copyright law and evaluates the authorship issue, the copyrightability issue and the ownership issue of AI-generated works.

Research project

Ying is the principal investigator (PI) of the project "Intellectual Property Law and the Protection of Intangible Culture Heritage”, which is the key research project funded by the Department of Education, Humanity and Social Science in Sichuan Province (2021). She is also the co-investigator and main researcher in many research projects, including the projects funded by the National Social Science Fund of China (2021), the Philosophy and Social Science project of Sichuan Province (2021), and the Social Science Foundation of Ministry of Education of China (2017). Ying has worked as a research assistant for the research projects of the National University of Singapore and ETH Zürich.
