Overview
The ability to deliver sustainable futures across all human activities requires a diverse set of practical skills. This Masters programme is deliberately designed as a skills- and techniques-based course rather than focusing narrowly on specific subject matter. It serves as a highly interdisciplinary conversion course, welcoming students from varied academic backgrounds and drawing upon the broad research strengths with the Department.
The course equips graduates to be workplace-ready and future-proofed, providing them with essential competencies and familiarity with the latest technologies and ideas in environmental sustainability.

What you'll study
The course comprises seven core taught modules and an eighth module chosen from two options, culminating in a dissertation that integrates your learning through independent research. The seven core taught modules are:
Core modules

This module provides a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of environmental sustainability. It covers core principles, concepts and global environmental challenges, along with sustainable development frameworks, metrics and indices, incorporating capacity, diversity, resource efficiency, climate mitigation and circular economy.

Core skills developed in this course include qualitative research methods, statistical data analysis, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), artificial intelligence applications and multi-criteria decision analysis techniques. These skills equip students to critically evaluate complex sustainability challenges by integrating diverse data sources, stakeholder perspectives and advanced analytical tools.

Led by Anthropology, this module explores the contextual and regulatory challenges of environmental sustainability. It provides an in-depth examination of regulatory frameworks, policies, and governance structures, emphasising cultural, social and institutional dimensions. Students will analyse how these frameworks are shaped by human-environment interactions across diverse contexts.

This module explores sustainable resource management principles, focusing on maximising resource efficiency and balancing the use of renewable/non-renewable resources. It covers ecosystem-based management approaches, life cycle analysis techniques for assessing environmental impacts and the principles of circular economy aimed at minimising waste and promoting resource reuse/recycling.

Led by the Marketing and Management Department, this module develops the skills you will need to understand organisations, their structure and culture. You will explore the leadership skills required to manage organisations and build an understanding of the emergent issues and challenges faced in fostering ethical leadership practices.

This practical module covers Environmental Impact Assessments to anticipate, minimise, and manage environmental impacts. This includes scoping case studies to define assessment boundaries, baselining to establish current environmental conditions, impact prediction and evaluation, development of mitigation strategies and effective communication of findings to stakeholders.

This module explores strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon budgeting, climate policy frameworks, adaptation techniques, mitigation approaches and climate finance mechanisms.
Optional modules

There are two optional modules which may be:
- Field Studies: Provides practical, embedded skills in organisational change management, helping students understand the practicalities of implementing change and policy shifts.
- Environmental Earth Science Fieldwork: Offered in partnership with the MSc Environmental Engineering, this module offers hands-on geoscience training through field trips and practical exercises.
Learning
This interdisciplinary course equips students with a diverse set of practical skills, drawing on expertise within Earth Sciences and related fields. Teaching is delivered through lectures, seminars, workshops, field-based activities and practical computer classes, ensuring an engaging and varied learning experience. Independent study, research, case study analyses and structured reading further reinforce learning. All modules are research-led and include embedded research training in both delivery and assessment. Throughout the course, students develop robust research skills, methodologies, and ethical awareness inspired by the work of active researchers, fostering a strong research mindset. Industry networks and collaborations support modules and dissertations, ensuring that learning remains at the forefront of the field and equips students with skills directly transferable to professional practice.

The MSc Environmental Sustainability programme is assessed through a combination of essays, reports, presentations and online assessments, completed both individually and in small groups. The course culminates in a major independent research project, completed with guidance from an appointed supervisor, allowing you to apply your learning to real-world sustainability challenges.

Our research consistently broadens and refines our knowledge of geological hazards, sustainability, infrastructure, climate change, energy, and natural resources.
Work in the Department is organised into three broad research themes – Earth Surface Processes and Hazards; Climate, Environment and Resources; and Physics and Chemistry of Earth and Planetary Processes. We are supported by major research centres, the Durham Geochemistry Centre, the Centre for Resources and Earth Energy Systems, the Durham Energy Institute, and the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience.
As well as our vital research, we also offer cutting-edge teaching through an MSc in Scientific Computing and Data Analysis (Earth and Environmental Sciences). We aim to provide a vibrant and stimulating academic environment in which you will not only be able to thrive but also play a key role in our vision of making a major contribution to ensuring a sustainable future.
You will be one of around 80 full-time postgraduates in the Department, who join us from around the world.

The Department has its home in the Arthur Holmes building, which features a range of purpose-built laboratories and teaching facilities. The Department is situated close to the centre of the city and the Cathedral in an area which is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
