Overview

The BSc Psychological and Behavioural Science degree combines a British Psychological Society (BPS) accredited education in psychology with a specialisation in cutting-edge behavioural science. Behavioural science is a relatively new discipline that focuses on applying psychological principles to challenges faced by organisations in the public, private and third sectors.

While psychology emphasises the mental processes that underlie behaviour, behavioural science emphasises behavioural outcomes and the design and evaluation of interventions to encourage behaviour change.

You will be taught state-of-the-art research methods, along with classic and innovative theory and research in psychology, following the BPS guidelines. You will learn to apply this knowledge to provide transformative insights for business, management and public policy. You can also apply to add a placement year or a year abroad to your degree, increasing the course from three to four years.

Durham Education 2027

The University is committed to continuous improvement and is currently undertaking a review to enhance our courses. As we make updates, some details of courses advertised for 2027 entry may change. These enhancements are being developed in consultation with students and in response to student feedback. We will not be making changes to degree subjects, academic standards or the broad concepts that will be taught, but to how courses are organised. In some cases this may mean that the balance of compulsory and optional modules may change. Any updates will be communicated transparently and by the end of summer 2026, ensuring applicants know exactly what to expect from their chosen degree.

What you'll study

The emphasis in the first year is to provide you with the fundamental knowledge and skills. Your lectures will cover cognitive, biological, social and developmental topics. The knowledge you gain in these lectures will provide the basis underpinning second and third-year modules. You will also develop research methods and statistical analysis skills. Finally, you will practice academic and transferable skills while exploring contemporary ideas in psychology.

In the second year, your knowledge and skills are further developed and fostered through lectures on cognitive, biological, social and developmental psychology. You will also be introduced to individual differences and clinical psychology in the second year. You will build on and advance your research methods and statistics and continue to explore contemporary psychological and behavioural scientific research, theories and concepts in detail.

In the third year, you will undertake your own dissertation research project and take four modules that cover a broad range of topics in Psychological and Behavioural Science. Example topics might include intergroup relations, organisational psychology, and mental health. Students are provided with guidance about modules that fit well together thematically and how these map onto potential future careers or interests. These modules are taught by lecturers who are leaders in their field, offering a unique opportunity to engage with and discuss the latest theoretical and empirical developments and to tailor your learning to your specific interests.

This course covers all the required subject areas for accreditation by the British Psychological Society (BPS) and provides eligibility for Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership (GBC).

            Learning

Your teaching will be delivered predominantly by leading academics through lectures, small group tutorials, workshops and practical classes, as well as through self-directed learning, such as research, reading and writing. You will get additional individual feedback and support opportunities from staff and student peers.

Most of the course will be delivered through face-to-face teaching, with some aspects taught using a hybrid approach of both face-to-face and online learning.

Generally, lectures highlight the main areas within a topic and tutorials guide your learning through discussions and critical evaluation. Workshops and practical sessions enable you to gain first-hand experience of key research skills in psychology, and to learn and apply associated statistical and IT packages.

            Assessment

Throughout the course, various assessment methods are used, including essays, reports, presentations and examinations.

In your final year, you will submit a dissertation that details your own original work. This is a great way to explore a topic you are passionate about and to showcase the many skills that you have gained throughout the course.

            Accreditations

Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

            Additional pathway

Students can apply to be transferred onto either the with  Year Abroad or with Placement pathway during the second year.

Places on these pathways are in high demand and if you are chosen your studies will extend from three years to four.

Durham University considers a wide variety of qualifications for admission. If you are unsure about any of the information below, please get in touch with us directly at North.America@durham.ac.uk - we're happy to help.

For 2025 entry, Durham has updated entry requirements for students attending a high school in the United States that does not offer an AP curriculum. For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum, we will consider honours courses or equivalent in place of APs. For students attending a school that has an AP curriculum, you will be expected to submit AP exams for admission.

Different degree programmes at Durham will require different exam scores.

            1. Check what the A-Level entry requirements are for your degree programme of choice. You can find this on the course page using our course database.
            2. Use the table below to see what the A-Level entry requirements are equivalent to for US applicants.

For students attending a school with AP curriculum

If your school offers AP curriculum, you will need to submit a minimum of two AP exam scores in order to meet the academic entry requirements for your degree programme of choice. Please note that you must sit and submit the examinations, we will not accept the course grade. If there is a specific subject required for admission, you must evidence this with an AP exam. For some programmes, one AP may be sufficient alongside two additional qualifications listed below.

For students attending a school that does not offer AP curriculum

If your school does not offer AP courses, Durham will consider students who are completing the US High School Diploma with Honours courses. Please note that we will be using the information submitted by your school in the UCAS Reference to confirm that your school does not offer AP curriculum, and if your school does, you cannot be considered with Honours courses alone and will need to complete APs to be considered for admission.

If you are planning to apply via this pathway, you will need to ensure that you have achieved an overall GPA of 3.7, and you will need a minimum of 3 yearlong equivalent honours courses taken in grade 11 and grade 12 in order to be eligible for admission.

Please note: Some degree programmes have subject specific requirements. If you are applying to a programme with subject specific requirements and you are unsure if your honours course will meet the requirements, please contact us.

If you are completing an Associate’s Degree or Year 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree, we can consider these for entry into Year 1 of a Bachelor’s Degree at Durham University.

If you are applying to a Degree Programme at Durham which has subject-specific entry requirements, these must still be met. We may require you to submit a curriculum overview, outlining the academic content covered within your Associate’s Degree / Bachelor’s Degree so we can determine whether it aligns with the subject-specific entry requirements. Typically, you will need to meet the A Level subject requirement with a yearlong equivalent course.

            Subject specific requirements

            • For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires A-level Mathematics, AP Calculus BC at grade 5 is required.
            • For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires A-Level English, AP English Literature and Composition is required.
            • For students wishing to gain entry to Music programmes, we recommend taking AP Music Theory.
            • For students applying to any History programme, one History AP is required. Only one of the two/three APs needed can be fulfilled using a History AP.
            • For students wishing to gain entry to a programme that requires GCSE Mathematics, SAT Reasoning Maths at 550+, ACT Maths at 21 or better, or a maths related AP course (e.g. Calculus AB or Statistics) with a score of 3 is mandatory.

For students applying with a High School Diploma and Honours courses where your school does not offer AP curriculum, you will need to have completed your school's equivalent of the above. If you are unsure if your curriculum meets the A Level requirements, please get in touch with us directly.

Important things to note regarding admission

            • You do not have to have completed all AP's at the time of applying. We understand that many students will take AP's in their Senior year and we can assess these when the results are released.
            • We do not accept the AP Capstone (comprising of AP Research and AP Seminar) in order to fulfil the conditions of an offer to study at Durham.
            • Students using an Associate’s Degree or similar to apply still need to meet all A Level subject requirements where applicable. If you are unsure if your qualification will meet these requirements, please get in touch with us.
            • If you are planning to use one year-long equivalent Dual Enrolment or College course, you need to have studied that subject for the equivalent of one full time year, e.g., across two semesters or three trimesters. For example, Psychology 101 and Psychology 102.
            • We also accept SAT Subject Tests. If you have SAT Subject Test scores, please get in touch to see if this can reduce the number of other standardised tests required.

"I study Psychological and behavioural science because understanding how the brain works will help me to create positive changes to human behaviour in any disciplines. Specifically at Durham, every module’s focus is research-based which equips me with substantial academic and research skills to conduct new and interesting research in Psychology. Besides, I also have the chance to familiarise myself with the psychological research in my freshman year, as a participant, I can have insights into the ethics, procedure, etc, the processes that involve in the conduction of the experiment."
