Aims

  • To facilitate students understanding of how to manage and implement research projects.
  • To develop students doctoral-level research skills in relation to developing innovative, rigorous, and relevant research questions.
  • To develop students critical understanding of choices during the research process and their implementation.
  • To develop students' teamwork and collaborative research skills.
  • To facilitate doctoral student community building.

Content

  • During this module, students will form teams to develop and implement a joint research project.
  • The students will pursue this research project throughout their first year of study (across all three terms), culminating in a project report for subsequent submission to an academic conference, academic journal or open science repository.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • The module will focus on guided work in small groups (research teams), complemented by workshops and peer feedback/coaching approaches.
  • The assessments are designed for students to learn from each other, strengthen the building of a doctoral community, and develop their teamwork skills for collaborative research.
  • The summative assessment of the module is designed to facilitate students understanding of the full research process, from idea development to data collection, and analysis to write-up and submission.
  • Comprehensive reading and self-study materials will be provided online.
