Aims

  • To begin to develop an understanding of the key elements underpinning the core primary national curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science) through critical analysis of professional debate and educational research.
  • To begin to explore pedagogical issues related to teaching the core primary national curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • To begin to consider the issues involved in ensuring the effective provision for all children when teaching and learning the core Primary National Curriculum subjects; (English, mathematics and science).

Content

  • To begin to develop knowledge and understanding of the Primary National Curriculum (DfE, 2013) and the values and assumptions which underpin it through the lens of the core subjects; English, mathematics and science through critical analysis of professional debate and educational research.
  • To begin to develop an understanding of the core Primary National Curriculumcore subjects (; E(English, mathematics and science).
  • To begin to explore pedagogical issues related to the teaching and learning of the core Primary National Curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • To begin to develop an understanding of the implications for the teaching and learning of English, mathematics and science, in the primary classroom.

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Explain key ideas related to core curriculum subjects (English, mathematics and science) in the primary setting.
  • Describe and critique key pedagogical approaches and curriculum design used in the teaching of the core subjects (English, mathematics and science).

Subject-specific Skills:

  • An informed and critical awareness of research in primary education which can enhance the effectiveness of the primary teacher.
  • Identify ways to relate educational theory to practice in the teaching and learning of the core subjects (English, mathematics and science).
  • Evaluate and critique pedagogical approaches related to the teaching and learning of the core subjects (English, mathematics and science).

  • Communicate ideas, principles and theories effectively in written and oral form;
  • Work collaboratively with peers;
  • Work effectively as part of a team, on given tasks and activities;
  • Engage in peer- and self-assessment;

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Lectures, workshops and seminars will be used as appropriate to support students in developing their critical understanding of the role of the teacher in the primary classroom.
  • All learning outcomes can be assessed appropriately via the two assignments.

Formative feedback for a section/plan (up to 300 words) of the written assignment will be provided through written feedback. Formative feedback for the poster will be provided via peer-review.
