Aims

  • In this module you will learn about the psychology of equality, diversity, and inclusivity. You will learn about mechanisms, theories, and applications.

Content

  • This module examines the psychology of equality, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI).
  • Example module topics may include EDI in the workplace, EDI in Education, and EDI in research.
  • The module considers conceptual issues related to understanding and defining EDI, theories that can explain current and past barriers to EDI in society, and psychological interventions designed to improve EDI.
  • The module will also cover related conceptual and historical issues in psychology

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:

  • Detailed knowledge of equality, diversity, and inclusivity including current theory and evidence
  • The ability to apply current psychological approaches to EDI in a real world context

  • Ability to review critically and consolidate understanding of a coherent body of psychological knowledge and apply it appropriately

  • Good IT skills in word processing
  • Ability to work independently in scholarship and research within broad guidelines

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Students' acquisition of detailed knowledge will be facilitated by lectures, interactive problem-based-learning tasks, audio-visual materials, discussions and reading lists
  • These modes of teaching provide students with detailed knowledge of the key theories and the skills needed to evaluate different theoretical positions in light of current evidence
  • The assessment will evaluate students' detailed subject knowledge via the use of an authentic assessment that will develop and demonstrate psychological literacy, e.g., creating a podcast episode on an EDI related topic.
  • An assessment of the range, recency and appropriateness of sources will be included in the overall assessment of the essay
  • The use of group discussions, group work, and interactive problem-based-learning tasks will ensure that students are exposed to a range of different theoretical positions, and encouraged to understand their inter-relations
  • Lectures, discussions, and interactive problem-based-learning tasks will also give students the opportunity to interpret and evaluate the significance of empirical work
  • The summative podcast introduces an authentic assessment. The podcast assesses students acquired psychological literacy and their ability to synthesise psychological knowledge and apply psychological theory and concepts to real world issues.
  • The podcast also assesses communication skills and psychological fluency. Since the podcast topics focus on modern EDI issues, e.g., in the workplace or in education, there is also a strong focus on the development of employability skills and problem-solving. enter text as appropriate for the module

Formative Assessment

Students will have the opportunity to share a brief audio recording that they will receive feedback on before submitting the final version. Students will also receive feedback on an individually written poster, presentation, or written page summarising their planned podcast episode.
