Change Password

Before you change your Durham IT account password, you should think carefully about what you want your new password to be. You will find information about how to choose a strong password and how passwords must comply with the University’s password standard here

If you know your current password, use the password change tool to update it.

Please note:

  • You will need to change your password everywhere you use it, including mobile phones, tablets, email clients and other devices that you use to access your email. Devices which automatically authenticate to your Durham IT account (such as your mobile phone) will not function until you do this.
  • If you have a number of devices which authenticate automatically you may even find your account is locked out for 15 minutes - so make sure you make the change everywhere it is required as soon as you can.
  • For some email clients and applications there may be a delay of up to an hour before the new password is recognised - if it's not working, give it a few minutes and try again.
  • If you have not set up the Self-Service Password Reset tool you will need to contact the IT Service Desk.

Set up the Self-Service Password Reset tool

If you already have a Durham IT account, make sure you don't get locked out by setting up the Self-Service Password Reset tool. Whether you forgot your password, you want to make it more memorable, or it's been compromised, you can reset it yourself, as long as you set your account up in advance.

If you know your current password, use the password change tool to update it.
