Swift box installation April 2026

Once a common sight in Durham City and the surrounding towns and villages, the swift population has declined at an alarming rate, with numbers falling by around 70% since 1995.

Swifts are now one of the target species in Durham University’s Biodiversity Strategy and we are developing nature conservation projects to help make Durham City a welcoming place once again for this formerly common bird. These initiatives include creating wildflower meadows and grasslands to attract insects as a vital food source, as well as installing nesting boxes high on our buildings to encourage nesting and breeding.

Biodiversity Manager Ian Armstrong said, “modern building design and maintenance have inadvertently removed traditional nesting sites, so our project to install nest boxes will be a great help to this much reduced species.”
