International security statement

Durham University uses systems, equipment and services that are secure, regularly updated, and aligned to best practice and security standards within our sector and other industries. 

This statement sets out the University’s commitment to international security. It also provides more detail of processes and actions we take to improve and safeguard the security of our diverse community. 

International Security Risks Group 

The University’s International Security Risks Group brings together colleagues from relevant teams to provide oversight of the international security risks relating to the University’s operation.  

The main purposes of the group are to: monitor evolving national security and international risk legislation, share intelligence gathered through sector expert groups, and oversee internal awareness raising and training on international security risks. 

Policies and guidance 

Durham University has a range of security policies and guidance in place which cover: 

  • Information Security Policy. 
  • Regulations, policies and standards for the use of University IT facilities. 
  • Records management and document handling.  
  • Privacy notices. 
  • Data protection. 
  • Data sharing. 
  • Off-campus working and travelling with data. 
  • Trusted Research.  
  • Export Controls. 

University policies detail the security protocols and standards that staff and visitors must follow in relation to access controls, confidentiality, business and private data protection, physical security and conduct. 

Policies and guidance documents are reviewed at least bi-annually and updated as necessary.  

Staff commitment  

When a member of staff begins their employment with the University, they are provided with our IT Regulations. In accepting their offer of employment, they are also accepting the terms of the IT Regulations. 

Staff are also required to complete a number of regular required learning courses on topics including health and safety, fire safety, and information security and data protection. 

Members of staff also receive regular, structured information on security issues. 

The University is committed to the application of the National Protective Security Authority’s principles of Trusted Research. Staff in STEM subjects undertake mandatory training related to Trusted Research and Export Controls to help them identify the potential risks of international collaboration.  

Our Research and Innovation Services conduct due diligence on all research-related work to ensure our staff and intellectual property are suitably protected, and that all legislation such as Export Controls are complied with. 

Technical and procedural controls 

The University implements a range of appropriate technical and procedural controls to protect its IT systems, devices, staff, students and data.
