What you'll study
The MBA has been developed to reflect the modern realities of an energetic corporate and commercial environment and equip you with key strengths such as analytical thinking, global awareness and effective communication skills.
Personalise your programme
Our MBA programme includes a combination of compulsory modules and specialist concentrations, giving you the opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and capabilities and specialise in specific areas most suited to your own professional needs. You will choose between the following specialist concentrations:
Consultancy
The Consultancy concentration develops your understanding of how consultants diagnose organisational challenges, develop evidence-based recommendations and support change. Through studying modules in Management Consultancy and Project Management, you will explore the consultancy process alongside the planning, leadership and delivery of complex projects, developing capabilities relevant to both external consultancy and internal advisory roles.
Entrepreneurship
The Entrepreneurship concentration explores how entrepreneurial opportunities are identified, evaluated and developed, whether through a new venture or within an established organisation. Through studying modules in Entrepreneurial Management and Entrepreneurial Practice, you will consider the strategic and practical challenges involved in developing ideas, mobilising resources and turning opportunities into viable business propositions.
Technology
he Technology concentration develops your ability to understand how data, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies can inform business decisions and create new opportunities. Through studying modules in AI & Business Analytics and Technology Forecasting & Innovation Analytics, you will explore approaches to analysing business data, evaluating technological change and considering its implications for innovation, strategy and organisational decision-making.
Finance
The Finance concentration develops your financial insight and strategic judgement for complex business decision-making. Through studying modules in Finance, you will explore financial risk management, funding and investment choices, fintech, mergers and acquisitions, alongside strategic interaction, negotiation, behavioural economics and organisational incentives. Together, the modules help you evaluate financial and strategic choices while understanding how uncertainty, competition and human behaviour shape executive decision-making.
Compulsory modules
-
Accounting and Finance develops your ability to understand and use financial information in managerial decision-making. You will examine financial statement analysis, investment appraisal, financial planning and risk assessment, alongside financing and capital structure decisions. The module helps you interpret organisational performance, evaluate investment choices and understand the financial implications of strategic decisions.
-
Applied Strategic Management develops your ability to analyse complex business environments, make strategic choices and translate them into action. You will examine how organisations formulate and implement business and corporate strategies to create and sustain competitive advantage, using real-world challenges to apply strategic concepts and analytical tools. The module also considers how changing competition, resources and technology shape strategic decisions.
-
Economics for Global Business helps you understand how economic forces shape organisations, industries and markets. You will develop the ability to interpret economic conditions and apply relevant analytical tools to business planning and decision-making, helping you evaluate opportunities, risks and strategic choices in the global economy.
-
International Business in Context takes learning beyond the classroom by examining how organisations operate in another international business environment. Through an overseas study experience and engagement with organisations, you will explore how economic, institutional and cultural conditions influence business practice and strategic decision-making. The module develops your ability to understand and operate effectively across different national and organisational contexts.
-
Leading and Managing People develops your effectiveness in understanding, leading and managing people within organisations. You will explore leadership and management, organisational behaviour, change and contemporary people-management practices, considering how these influence motivation, relationships, performance and organisational effectiveness.
-
Marketing develops your ability to understand markets, customers and competitors and use those insights to inform business decisions. You will examine buyer behaviour, segmentation, targeting and positioning, branding and marketing strategy across business-to-consumer and business-to-business contexts. The module also explores customer relationships, services and digital marketing, alongside the ethical and sustainability implications of contemporary marketing practice.
-
Operations and Technology develops your understanding of how organisations design, manage and improve the processes through which products and services are delivered. You will explore the factors shaping operational decisions and use tools and approaches to evaluate performance across cost, speed, flexibility, dependability and sustainability, while considering the role of technology in supporting effective operations.
-
The Strategic Consulting Project is the major applied project of the MBA and provides an opportunity to integrate learning from across the programme. Working with a real organisation, you will investigate a significant business or organisational challenge, analyse the issue in depth and develop evidence-based conclusions and recommendations. The project allows you to demonstrate your ability to apply strategic, analytical and consulting skills to a substantial real-world problem.
-
Sustainability and Ethics examines how environmental, social and ethical considerations influence organisations and the decisions they make. You will explore the role and responsibilities of organisations in society and consider contemporary issues in sustainability, business ethics, corporate social responsibility, risk, compliance and governance. The module develops your ability to evaluate the wider consequences of organisational and strategic choices
-
The Boardroom Exercise brings together learning from across the MBA in an intensive board-level simulation. Working within the context of an international organisation, you will evaluate complex strategic issues, contribute to senior-level discussions and experience the challenges of collective decision-making and corporate governance. Learning
Key timings for your MBA
The MBA commences in September 2027.
The MBA is delivered in person at Durham University Business School over 12 months. Teaching normally takes place Monday to Friday, with taught sessions typically scheduled from 9am to 1pm and programme-related activities taking place during the afternoons.
Your MBA begins with a two-week Welcome & Orientation programme. During the first week, you will be introduced to the MBA, the wider University and the programme team. The second week focuses on activities designed to help you get to know your cohort, prepare for your studies and begin developing the collaborative working relationships that will be important throughout the programme.
You will learn through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops, case studies, group-based activities, presentations and engagement with invited business practitioners. These are supported by substantial independent study, allowing you to prepare for taught sessions, explore subjects in greater depth and apply learning across different areas of the MBA.
Applied and experiential learning is embedded throughout the programme. This includes the Boardroom Exercise, the Strategic Consulting Project and the compulsory International Business in Context module, which includes an overseas study experience. Together, these activities give you opportunities to apply your learning to organisational challenges, learn from your peers and develop your ability to operate effectively across different business and international contexts.
Assessment
Assessment methods vary across the programme and are designed to test both your understanding of management concepts and your ability to apply them to complex business and organisational challenges. You will be assessed through a combination of written assignments, case analyses, examinations, individual and group reports, presentations, portfolios and applied project work.
Assessment is closely connected to the practical and integrative nature of the MBA. This includes the Boardroom Exercise, where you are assessed through a simulated senior-management environment, as well as concentration-specific assessments which may include analytical projects or the development of business proposals.
The programme culminates in the 60-credit Strategic Consulting Project, a substantial individual project in which you work with a real organisation to investigate an agreed business or organisational issue. The project enables you to integrate and apply learning from across the MBA, demonstrating your ability to analyse evidence, exercise professional judgement and develop well-founded recommendations.
Accreditations
The MBA is accredited by the Association of MBAs (AMBA). Durham University Business School also holds AACSB International and EQUIS accreditation, giving the School triple accreditation from three of the leading international bodies in business and management education.

Scholarships and bursaries
The skills and knowledge I've gained during my MBA will undoubtedly be valuable in my future career. The programme was hands-on, with projects like our boardroom project, where we conducted a full analysis of a company, developed strategic plans, and acted as company executives to present our findings. I still remember the immense sense of achievement we all felt the day after we presented our ideas.
