The Junior Common Room (JCR) is the name given to our student body, inclusive of both Undergraduates and Postgraduate students. In true Cuth’s fashion, the JCR is an independent Charity separate from both the College and University - and is dedicated to providing student enrichment and experience within Cuth’s. It is run by student volunteers, and led by the Student Executive Committee and the President of the Society - a sabbatical on-site role.
The JCR engages closely with the Society’s Senior Management, to reflect the student voice in the university sphere, and to ensure that Cuth’s continues to develop according to the needs of all of its members. When you become a member of the JCR, you too can get involved in making the student voice heard; in challenging the way we do things, making suggestions and carrying ideas forward!
As well as being the representative body, the JCR supports and funds over 40 different sports and societies, alongside a plethora of facilities that support your university experience - including two gyms, a music room, a conference room and common rooms. It similarly runs the University’s only entirely student-led library, and organises all of the main social events in the JCR Calendar; including Fresher’s Week, Michaelmas Ball, The Feast of St. Cuthbert, Summer Ball and Cuth’s Day.
The JCR similarly serves as an organisation in which to enrich your CV and work experience; allowing you to get involved in a number of committees that allow you to put leadership into practice. Whether that’s fundraising with the Outreach Committee, running campaigns with the Welfare Committee, or becoming a volunteer student librarian, the JCR is there to broaden access, represent and support you throughout your time here at Cuth’s.
The JCR is run for students, by students, and is a fantastic way to meet new people within college. There are over 110 volunteer positions in the JCR (with no prior experience required!), ranging from Social Chair, who plans our balls, to Treasurer, who runs the JCR finances. You can run for any of these roles at our democratic JCR Meetings - offering great opportunities to give back to the community, whilst developing employable skills along the way!
Cuth’s JCR is a registered charity, aiming to enrich and support student’s lives during their time at University, and providing the extra-curricular opportunities that make Cuth's the unforgettable community it is.
