Field Courses

As a highly practical subject, fieldwork is at the heart of anthropology. We offer a residential field course where our students can put their research skills into practice at a range of European sites, or a virtual alternative.

On the field courses, our students have the chance to develop a number of key anthropological and broader transferable skills including conducting interviews and surveys, working in teams, handling ethical and cultural sensitivities and analysing data. 

Destinations vary year to year, and have recently included Malta, Gibraltar, Fuerteventura, Cyprus and Greece, with flights and accommodation fully funded by the department. Our students hugely value the chance to get out of the classroom and develop their practical skills. As one of our third years put it in their module feedback:
