We are delighted you have chosen to join us for the next few years, and are looking forward to meeting and getting to know you soon. Anthropology staff are busy preparing events for the start of term to help you get to know us, and each other, and find out more about what Anthropologists do, and why we do it. We are excited to have you arrive, and are keen to involve you in all aspects of Department life.
Anthropology is a transformative discipline - it will change the way you think, and maybe even who you want to be! We strongly believe that everyone should take at least one Anthropology course in their lifetime, and so we open some of our modules to students from across the University. This means our Department is a busy and vibrant place, where you will also find friendly postgraduates and staff. We conduct research on all manner of topics imaginable (from energy to evolution, and reproduction to rhetoric), so we are sure you will find plenty to interest and enthuse you here, and we are excited to be able to share it all with you.
See you in welcome and orientation week!

I’m Eric, one of your peer mentors for BA Anthropology. I remember the time I had my first lecture when I saw a hundred of us sitting in the same theatre. I could not imagine the journeys we would take to discover specific areas and topics we enjoyed. Although these interests may lead you to different paths during your study, the course mates, and lecturers you met will still be around you. And I am sure regardless of our interests, you will seek great discussions and advice from them in your academic journey. Indeed, I hope that your mind is prepared and open to all the possibilities you have for exploring in the Anthropology department. See you all around in Durham and the Dawson Building!
Once you have completed enrolment you can access Learn Ultra & the Anthropology Student Community Sharepoint site, which are key resources for your Anthropology studies at Durham.
The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.
