We recently took part in a delegation along with the Department of Education to collaborate with academic institutions and archaeological organisations in India. We are all looking forward to working together to manage cultural heritage sustainably.
The Department of Archaeology at Durham has worked with colleagues in India for many years through collaborative field projects and has regularly welcomed students from India to study with us here in Durham. Our recent delegation to India aimed at building on these existing connections and exploring how we can further complement the exciting developments in Indian heritage. The trip included a visit to the Archaeological Survey of India and also some fruitful time spent with colleagues at our partner University, Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda – where we renewed our important Memorandum of Understanding - and at IIT Gandhinagar. We enjoyed excellent hospitality and a warm welcome as well as a visit with colleagues to the incredible World Heritage Site of Rani ki Vav. We are exploring a range of possible collaborations, including joint student training projects, staff exchange programmes and major research collaborations. We are looking forward to developing these with our Indian partners, old and new, to ensure we can combine our complementary areas of expertise to meet our joint goal of ensuring the sustainable management of cultural heritage.
