AHRC Northern Bridge Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership (NBDTC) Funding

After submitting your application to the PhD programme, and receiving an acceptance notification, you will need to submit your Northern Bridge nomination form to the department by email to archaeology.postgrad.research@durham.ac.uk. 

The deadline is 5pm, 10 January 2024.

There is a three-stage process, in which all applications received are first graded and ranked by an internal scholarships committee in January/February, with the top-ranked students being nominated for evaluation by the AHRC Subject Scrutiny Panel in February/March, and the final AHRC Selection Panel in around March/April.

There is a limit on how many people we can nominate for consideration by the AHRC panels. This varies from year to year but normally we hope to put our top 6-8 applicants through.

Please note that there will be an information session on the Northern Bridge competition prior to December, to which all NB applicants will be invited.

The AHRC Northern Bridge Nomination Form

The Form consists of two main parts: 1 and 2.

Part 1, sections 1-4 are personal details and should be filled out by the student.

Part 5A is the research proposal. You should fill out the various sections by splitting the 750 word proposal from your main application.  You also have three other text boxes (each 100 words) for a summary, to highlight existing skills, and to set out any training needs.

Parts 5b and 6 you can ignore.

Part 2 should be filled out by the supervisors in collaboration with the student before the form is submitted for consideration.

This is a change to previous practice, but it is essential that the short-listing committee have details of supervision, training and environment in order to make an informed decision.  Applications submitted without a completed Part 2 will be severely at a disadvantage as the panel will be unable to award a grade to any of these key selection criteria.

All candidates and supervisors selected to go through to the main NB panel will be given a short window of opportunity to fine-tune the application in response to feedback from the shortlisting panel.

After the internal selection committee has met in January/February, nominees will be provided with feedback on their applications. They will then submit revised versions to the department via email to the Postgraduate Research Coordinator, and the department submits their package of nominations to Northern Bridge for their consideration.
