BA Archaeology and Ancient Civilisations (VQ48)

This course gives students a good general overview of world archaeology, but also allows them to focus in particular on the great ancient civilisations of Europe, the Near East and Asia, including Ancient Greece and Rome, Egypt, the Near East, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal. This programme offers great flexibility with options to take modules in other departments, including Classics and Ancient History.

Explore your interests and learn new skills

This course draws on the latest research to explore the ancient world. Compulsory modules in Archaeology include Ancient Civilisations: Sources, Approaches and Methods, Cities in Antiquity, Ancient Mediterranean Civilisations: East and West, and Professional Training.

As part of this degree, you also have the opportunity to take up to two modules at Level 1 and two modules at Level 2 offered in the Department of Classics and Ancient History, alongside the modules you will study in Archaeology. Recent options have included: 

  • Greek Art and Architecture
  • Living in a Classical World
  • Remembering Athens
  • Roman Religion
  • Roman Buildings and Decoration
  • Crisis of the Roman Republic
  • History of the Hellenistic Age
As a single-honours Archaeology programme, students  also benefit from our full range of training opportunities in Archaeology.

This includes the opportunity to gain experience in the practical skills required to undertake professional archaeology.

Students studying this course can follow a route accredited by CIfA, the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists. Choosing an accredited undergraduate degree is widely recognised as the first step on a career pathway leading to professional status. To obtain a CIfA accredited degree, students study modules which equip them with the requisite theoretical and practical knowledge to act as a foundation for a career in professional archaeology. 

All students studying this degree programme have the opportunity to participate in fieldwork, which provides the opportunity to join a real archaeological excavation and learn learn the most up-to-date fieldwork techniques. We also offer the opportunity to take part in a paid placement year with our commercial archaeology unit, where you will gain even more practical skills and qualifications.
