Study Abroad

The Department of Archaeology offers full-time undergraduate students the opportunity to study abroad in their third year.

Please read the university's latest information about Covid-19 and studying abroad.

The following programmes include a required placement undertaken during the third year of study (between Levels 2 and 4):

  • BA Archaeology (with year abroad).
  • BSc Archaeology (with year abroad).
  • BA Archaeology of the Historic World (with year abroad).
  • BA Archaeology and Ancient Civilisations (with year abroad).

The placement university is chosen in consultation with the Department of Archaeology's International Coordinator from those available through Durham University's Erasmus links, its Overseas Exchange Programme or the Department's own partnership agreements.

Studying abroad can be a life changing opportunity: the chance to experience a new culture, to study in a different environment, and to make new connections and friendships.

A year abroad helps to contribute to the following learning outcomes:

  • A broader understanding of archaeology as practised in another country.
  • Knowledge of a foreign culture and the ability to live and work within a foreign culture.
  • Depending on the destination, students may also develop language skills.
