Research and Impact

The Department of Computer Science is a nationally and internationally recognised leader in research and innovation, with over 60 staff members. We foster a vibrant research environment by embedding EDI, strengthening support for staff and PGRs, and investing in infrastructure to enhance experience and opportunity. Our research groups deliver world-leading work across core computer science disciplines, strategic priorities, and real-world challenges. We also maintain strong links with industry and develop cross-disciplinary research with collaborators across the University and around the world.

Researchers in Computer Science are organised into cognate research groups. A research group provides a platform to support its members to both work together and with others and to develop and sustain an overall profile within the research area.

Our vision for impact is to have impact creation embedded within all aspects of our research, the promotion of a strong impact culture, a diverse portfolio of impact activities, and the involvement of many staff in impact creation.

Our vision for the entire of Computer Science is to have well-formed and sustainable groups of researchers working together and producing excellent research so that these groups cover areas of research across the Computer Science research spectrum, interact with researchers and/or application domains within the Department, the University and beyond, and produce research that helps to shape the discipline of Computer Science and/or benefit wider society at both a national and global level.

Our Research Vision

Our vision for Computer Science research at Durham is to have well-formed and sustainable groups of researchers working together and producing excellent research so that these groups cover areas of research across the Computer Science research spectrum, interact with researchers and/or application domains within the Department, the University and beyond, and produce research and impact that helps to shape the discipline of Computer Science and/or benefit wider society at both a national and global level.

Our strategies are:

to retain critical mass in core areas of research, establish critical mass in emergent areas of research, and build new areas of research so that researchers within a group can work together to produce excellent research and also so that researchers within different groups can collaborate on intra-group research
to develop more research collaborations both within Computer Science and also of a cross-disciplinary and industrial nature so that the research produces academic impact within Computer Science and/or impact on societal and environmental challenges
to build a vibrant, dynamic, diverse and inclusive research community within which there is a varied range of research activities, that engages with research and researchers on both a national and an international level, and that is conducive to cross-discipline collaborative activities, with research excellence pervasive throughout.

Research Themes

Our research groups build on our strengths and include emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence and Digital Humanities, Algorithms and Complexity, Artificial Intelligence and Human Systems, Network Engineering, Science and Theory, Scientific Computing, and Vision, Imaging and Visualization.
