Congratulations and Welcome to the Department of Computer Science

head of department, matthew, johnson

Congratulations on gaining a place to study Computer Science in Durham! You are joining us at such an exciting time.

This is a really amazing time to join us and take your interest in Computer Science further.  At Durham we are growing our Department and the opportunities this affords to students.

And it’s an exciting time for the discipline - with graduates being much in demand and pioneering research covering some key topics of our time.

I’d like to warmly welcome you to both Durham, and to being a Computer Scientist. Enjoy your studies, enjoy the many other activities that are on offer at University, and enjoy Durham!

Studying Computer Science at Durham University is definitely challenging but fun. You’ll be shown topics you may have never heard of and you might find something new that interests you. I enjoyed C much more than I expected to! Durham is a great city too and you’ll have an opportunity to meet tons of amazing people. My advice is to try out anything you’re interested in even if you don't have any knowledge on it. I joined my college DnD society with no knowledge of how to play the game, and now it’s my favourite past time! Also, don't be afraid to reach out to other students or professors for help and advice; they will be more than willing to answer any questions.

Your first week in Durham – University Induction Week Events Timetable

The Timetable has been designed so College events don’t clash with any of your academic departmental events, but offer you lots of opportunities to meet your fellow Freshers, find your way around and settle into student life.

To help you keep track of where you need to be, and what you need to do during your first busy days at university, in your College and your Department, we have created a day-by-day University Induction Planner. This should help you to plan your schedule, so you don't miss anything - from being issued with your Campus Card or meeting the staff in your Department, to trying out for a sports team or joining a student society.
