Jennifer Terry

Congratulations to Dr Jennifer Terry, who has been awarded a prestigious Fulbright Scholar grant.

Jennifer researches Black and African diaspora cultures, with a particular focus on literature and visual art. During her Fulbright exchange in Autumn 2026, she will be based at The Getty Center in Los Angeles, where she will work on her interdisciplinary book project, Imagined Futures in African American Narrative.

Taking up the politics of time across art forms, her book examines how contemporary Black artists and writers shape visions or ‘narratives’ of the future despite historical patterns that have linked ideas of progress, modernity and futurity to European advancement. By exploring such accounts of the temporal, Jennifer aims to deepen understanding of how more equitable futures can be realised.

Alongside this work, through collaboration with the Getty’s African American Art History Initiative, Jennifer hopes to strengthen the international connections of the Centre for Visual Arts and Culture (CVAC) and of ‘African Atlantic Lives and Visual Culture,’ an interdisciplinary research network that she leads. She is also looking forward to engaging with local arts and sports communities and building new friendships in Los Angeles.

Congratulations to Jennifer on this exciting opportunity.
