Dr. Sarah Knuth (In memoriam)

It is with immense sadness that we share the news of the recent passing of Dr. Sarah Knuth, Associate Professor in Human Geography.

Sarah joined Durham Geography as an Assistant Professor in 2017. Her research focused on the political economy of climate change and energy transition, with particular reference to the role of cities in achieving low carbon futures. Through work on critical issues such as the retrofit of housing, green infrastructure investment, and the growth of the renewables industry, Sarah demonstrated how the energy transition is being shaped by new financial instruments, state policy, and the extraction of value. Her research, writing, and policy work was underpinned by analytic rigour, empirical depth, and a passionate commitment to achieving a just transition that benefitted poor and disadvantaged communities. She quickly became one of the foremost global scholars of the energy transition, whose scholarship will continue to serve as an inspiration for those working towards a just transition, both within and beyond academia. 

Alongside her research, Sarah was a much-loved teacher and a supportive and perceptive supervisor, whose enthusiasm for her subject was compelling. She was instrumental in developing new field teaching on climate change and just energy transitions and was adept at translating her research talents into engaging and insightful teaching.

As well as being a leading researcher and excellent teacher, Sarah was a wonderful colleague. She was known in the Geography department for her optimism, positive outlook and her supportive and caring nature. She is sorely missed by all of her colleagues.
