Dr John Wreglesworth Scholarship

Thanks to the generous legacy donation of supporter and friend Dr John Wreglesworth to the University, the Department of History is pleased to be able to offer this new Undergraduate Scholarship. The Scholarship is designed to aid a student from the north-east who is in need of financial support, and who has been educated at a state-maintained school, college or other secondary education provider. To help address under-representation, the Department therefore encourages applications to the Dr John Wreglesworth Scholarship from any student planning to embark on an Undergraduate History or Joint Honours degree with a minimum 50% History content who meets the above criteria. Those students undertaking a foundation year are also encouraged to apply.

Applications for the academic year 2024-25 are now open with a closing date of 4th November 2024.

Value of scholarship £4,000 per year of study, which contributes to tuition fees, living costs, and other associated costs of study
Duration

Up to 5 years of study. If the degree is a three-year course, this can be supplemented by financial support during one or both of the following:

  1. A Foundation year of study in the year preceding the start of the degree, meaning the degree course applied for is BA History with Foundation which lasts four years (V102).
  2. After the Honours degree, a Masters year in History (V1KC07) or Medieval and Early Modern Studies (R9K807), if accepted to one of those courses.

Eligibility

Applicants for the Dr John Wreglesworth Scholarship must:

  • Be applying to join the Department of History at Durham University in October 2024 to take an Honours degree or a Joint Honours degree with 50% minimum History content
  • Come from a household with an income of below £62,342 per year as assessed by Student Finance England or equivalent UK government body
  • Be paying tuition fees on the Home student tariff
  • Have been educated at a state-maintained UK school, college or other education provider for the whole of your education (or in the case of asylum seekers and refugees, the whole of your education since arrival in the UK)
  • Live (at the time of applying) at an address in the North East of England with a postcode beginning with the first two letters NE, SR, TS, DH, or DL

Priority will be given to applicants who are the first generation of their family to attend higher education, are care-experienced, or are estranged from their family.

Please note that receipt of the funds will be dependent on receiving an offer to study at Durham University, meeting entry conditions, and taking up a place with us.

  3. Arrange a letter of support

    You should arrange for a letter of support from your teacher or person in a similar position of authority to be submitted to history.operations@durham.ac.uk by the deadline of 23:59 on 4th November 2024. If you are having trouble obtaining a supporting letter, please let us know
