Pig Tales at 30 & Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein in French
Wednesday 11 March, 7:30pm

Durham University’s Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLAC) is delighted to highlight a special literary evening with the celebrated contemporary French writer Marie Darrieussecq, who will give a reading and take part in a Q&A at Collected Books on Wednesday 11 March at 7:30pm.

The event marks the 30th anniversary of Pig Tales (Truismes), the novel that first established Darrieussecq as one of the most original and provocative voices in contemporary French literature. Blending satire, feminism and the uncanny, Pig Tales remains a landmark text in discussions of gender, transformation and the politics of the body.

The evening will also explore Darrieussecq’s most recent project: her new French translation of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Revisiting this foundational work of Gothic fiction and science fiction, Darrieussecq brings fresh insight to another iconic woman writer and her enduring monster figure. The conversation will consider literary creation, monstrosity, translation, and women’s writing across languages and centuries.

Generously funded by the French Embassy in the United Kingdom, this public engagement event forms part of International Women’s Day and Francophone Month celebrations hosted at the bookshop.

The event is open to all.
