The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is proudly committed to a policy of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion that embraces all our students and staff. The University’s EDI policy states our conviction that the best outcomes of wellbeing and achievement will be forthcoming when ‘everyone respects and understands the value of different people working together’; when ‘everyone is treated fairly’; and when ‘negative behaviours and attitudes such as prejudice, discrimination and harassment are unacceptable, and people feel supported to challenge these.’
Our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion committee, which meets once every term, ensures that EDI issues are at the forefront of the School’s policy-making and practice. The committee conducts periodic evaluations and reviews of EDI, devising appropriate forms of information-capture when required and proactively initiates and implements measures to improve EDI within the School.
Athena Swan: The School is committed to addressing and advancing gender equality in academia including issues of representation, progression, and career development. Our Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team undertake evaluations of current practices and issues as required by the Athena SWAN Charter. The Team report on AS activity and ensure that the AS action plan is implemented and measured as appropriate.
Decolonising MLaC: Decolonising MLAC is committed to decolonising the School in all its aspects, including research and education. Some of the work undertaken includes an ongoing set of reading and viewing recommendations. Another comprises the efforts of the Decolonising MLAC Research Group.
Disability Support: The School offers disability support to students, staff and visitors that is tailored and specific to each individual. We work with the University’s Disability Support service to ensure that individuals who request disability support and adjustments do not encounter any barriers that affect their learning experience and academic success.
Widening Participation: The School is committed to widening participation and ensuring that every opportunity is given to underrepresented and disadvantaged groups and individuals so they can benefit from higher education. Our admissions strategy, outreach activities, and community engagement action plans all work towards improving access and participation for potential students from disadvantaged backgrounds and those from BAME backgrounds.
