We welcome the outstanding British pianist Roderick Chadwick to give a morning concert bringing together compositions by current Durham students, workshopped in the preceding week, and music from several generations of the Messiaen tradition.
Included is the British premiere of Alexander Goehr’s Surrounding Silences, one of his last works, and Dorothy Howell’s Spindrift, which has one foot on either side of the Channel. Edward Cowie’s Preludes roam the world, taking us to bodies of land and water far grander than the Charenton, which weaves its way throughout Messiaen’s ‘Cetti’s Warbler’ and inspires some of the most emotionally direct music of the celebrated bird cycle.
