Julian Horton’s new book published by Cambridge University Press
Professor Julian Horton’s new book entitled “Robert Schumann: Piano Concerto” has been published by Cambridge University Press. Offering a concise introduction to one of the most important and influential piano concertos in the history of Western music, this handbook provides an example of the productive interaction of music history, music theory and music analysis.
“My book investigates Schumann’s Piano Concerto, a pivotal work for the genre’s history, from several perspectives. Its core is a substantial analysis of the entire Concerto. This is framed on one side by a study of the work’s genesis, sources and relationships to Schumann’s aesthetic and critical thought, and on the other side by a reconstruction of its performance history and critical reception’”, said Professor Horton. “I’ve made a particular effort to reconstruct the Concerto’s roots in early nineteenth-century repertoire which falls well outside the musicological and performing canons, but with which Schumann was vitally engaged as both composer and critic. Schumann’s Piano Concerto has been an obsession of mine since I was a child, so it’s been a particular joy to write this book”.
Julian Horton is Professor of Music Theory and Analysis at the department of music. His research focuses on the analysis and reception of nineteenth-century instrumental music.
