BSc (Honours) in Natural Sciences

This degree allows students to study three subjects (or two subjects which do not follow a strict Joint-Honours route) from across the University, but having at least half of their studies coming from within the Faculty of Science. Graduation from this route is with a BSc (Hons) degree in Natural Sciences with the main subjects studied listed on the degree certificate.

On this route, students can study the same three subjects each year. Alternatively, it is possible for the second year to build on first-year studies in one or two subjects, combining more advanced modules in these subject, whilst commencing study of a new subject. It is possible to study either two or three subjects in the third year, all of which must have been studied in earlier years.

At the end of Year 2, the BSc allows the option of transferring onto either “with Year Abroad” or “with Placement” pathway.  Note that these options are competitive and so applicants cannot apply for these pathways through UCAS.

Year 1

Students must study at least two subjects, but no more than four, with modules selected which give good progression into the second-year in at least some of those subjects. It is possible to specialise by taking up to four modules in one subject.

BSc Natural Sciences students often take two modules from three subjects, although other combinations are possible. This combination would normally allow progression to some later study in any or all of those subjects. The design of the course is constrained by the entry requirements and limits of the University’s academic timetable.

Year 2

At least two but no more than three subjects can be studied on a pathway that gives reasonable progression into modules available in the third year of those subjects.  It is possible to specialise by taking up to four modules in one subject. Students are required to build on one or two of the subjects they studied in their first year, but also have the option of starting a new subject. Within the constraints of the University timetable and ensuring a suitable pathway for progression into the third year, students have considerable freedom in their academic choices.

Year 3

Students study either two or three subjects and can specialise by taking up to five modules in one subject. Students also study between one and three Capstone Modules: these are modules which are student-led and involve independent thought. In the past, these have included things like Dissertation; Advanced Laboratory Work and X into schools, where X is the particular science discipline.

Study of Just two subjects within Natural Sciences

This is possible through either one of our Named Routes or Joint Honours within Natural Sciences. It is possible to just study other pairs of subjects from within Natural Sciences, but they are not all guaranteed to timetable. In the event that the likelihood of a pair of subjects timetabling is small, candidates who have failed to specify three subjects will have an unsuccessful application.
