What happens to my application?

Please check your email and admissions portal regularly throughout the application process, as this will be our main method of communication. When contacting us, please quote the student number provided under 'profile details' within the portal, to help us respond to your enquiry as quickly as possible.

  1. Once you submit your online application, it is received by Durham University and uploaded to the admissions system.
  2. You will receive an acknowledgement email confirming that your application has been submitted.
  3. Your application will be reviewed to ensure it meets the minimum entry requirements and that all required documents have been provided. If anything is missing, we will contact you through the new admissions system to request any outstanding information. So please keep an eye on the admissions portal.
  4. Once your application is complete and two suitable academic references have been requested, it will be forwarded to the relevant academic staff within the Department for assessment.
  5. If your application and references are satisfactory, and there is a suitable supervisor or project that aligns with your research interests, you may be contacted by the Department to discuss potential opportunities. Initial contact will normally be by email, and you may be invited to attend an interview where appropriate.
  6. If an offer is made, you will subsequently receive an official offer letter from the University. Please note that funding information is not included in offer letters. Where applicable, a separate funding or award letter will be issued.
