The Faculty provides academic and administrative leadership, overseeing the quality of education, research and overall student and staff experience within its constituent departments, institutes, centres, and multidisciplinary programmes. It serves as a conduit for communication between central teams and departments facilitating the flow of information and ensuring that departmental feedback is considered in institutional decision-making processes. It further coordinates and supports the implementation of university policies, ensuring consistency and compliance with institutional standards. By fostering collaboration among departments, the Faculty promotes interdisciplinary research and educational initiatives that might not be possible within the isolated confines of a single department.
The Faculty of Science is led by the Executive Dean for Science and the Deputy Executive Deans and it is managed by the Faculty Manager assisted by the Deputy Faculty Managers and teams Managers.
The five teams at the Faculty of Science office support and coordinate a broad range of activities across the faculty. The Faculty Administration team assists the Executive Dean and manages various faculty-wide processes, including academic progression and undergraduate appeals. The Faculty Learning and Teaching team facilitates student progression across the faculty and oversees the administration of our multidisciplinary programmes. Our Digital Learning Developers team finds innovative and effective ways to enhance on-campus learning and supports staff with online learning initiatives. The Student Support team provides proactive and reactive pastoral assistance, directing students to Durham University’s wide range of specialist services, including mental wellbeing support. Our Finance Hub supports departments with financial management and planning.
The Science Education Hub (SEH) plays a key role in supporting educational development within our Faculty of Science. It promotes collaboration across faculties and departments and contributes and drives advancements in learning and teaching practice.
The SEH is dedicated to fostering an environment where educational excellence thrives. We serve as the nexus for communication and coordination across departments, ensuring that our faculty remains at the forefront of science education.
The Deputy Executive Dean for Education holds strategic responsibility for the SEH, with support from the Faculty and Deputy Faculty Manager, as appropriate. Additionally, the Deputy Executive Dean for Academic Student Experience, the Deputy Executive Dean for International, and the Deputy Executive Dean for PGR and Student Enterprise provide strategic guidance on developing student support mechanisms and enhancing the educational experience for all our students and postgraduate researchers. The SEH team also includes members from the Faculty of Science Administration, the L&T team, the Digital Learning Developers Team, and the Student Support Team.
