What Makes Us Unique?

We Are Doing World-Leading Research AND Teach

Our curriculum is deeply intertwined with our world-leading research. Our students are exposed to cutting-edge ideas, the latest debates, and emerging hypotheses. They ask meaningful questions and find the path towards answers with the help of their tutors. Our approach fosters an environment where:

  • Learners actively engage in intellectual synthesis
  • Independent study is essential and supported
  • There are opportunities for research project design and implementation
  • Critical thinking is paramount

We prioritise inquiry-based learning over the mere acquisition of content. This approach not only fosters a deeper understanding but also brings us closer to our students, and our students closer to us.

We Care Deeply About Our Students

Student well-being and success are our top priorities. We understand that university life can be both exciting and challenging, and we are here to support our learners every step of the way. Whether they need academic guidance, a listening ear, or help navigating the complexities of student life, the Faculty of Science and Durham University has a range of dedicated resources available:

  • Students have access to a network of advisors, learning and teaching teams, and student support officers within their departments and colleges. These trained individuals understand specific challenges and opportunities and are ready to provide tailored support.
  • The Science Faculty Officers and the Academic Support Office offer additional layers of care, ensuring students always have someone to turn to, no matter what their needs may be.
  • We believe in open communication and value student feedback. Student representatives on key committees ensure their voices are heard and their concerns are addressed.
  • Our students also benefit from a wide array of services across our faculty and university, ranging from language and study skills support to libraries and IT assistance.
  • The University provides professional counselling services, careers advice, financial support and advice, and other essential resources to help our students navigate any challenges they may face.
  • We recognise the importance of peer support and encourage our students to connect with one another and build friendships that are made to last

We are more than educators; we are a community that cares.
