Abstract:
This presentation addresses the development of equitable U.S. financial aid policy by focusing on understanding postsecondary financial need for students with disabilities. The study draws from survey and interview responses with disabled college students to highlight the complexities and gaps in current financial aid systems, particularly as disability-related costs often exceed what typical aid mechanisms account for. Findings reveal significant disability-related expenses (e.g., medical devices, hospitalizations, therapies, tutoring, mental health services) that many students face continually and anticipate in the future. The study identifies systemic challenges within current financial aid and disability support policies, including the inadequate consideration of medical and other disability-related costs, highlighting opportunities for policy reform and improved institutional collaboration.
Key implications emphasize strengthening cooperation between postsecondary institutions, disability services offices, vocational rehabilitation programs, and K-12 transition staff. The presentation calls for enhanced capture of disability-related financial needs in aid applications and explores the need to differentiate between low- and high-cost disability considerations. The research contributes critical insight into how current aid policies fall short for students with disabilities, advocating for more responsive, inclusive financial aid frameworks to support equitable access and success in higher education for this population.
