Goethe Institut Certification Examinations

Do you require evidence of your German language skills that is recognised all over the world? As a licensed examination partner Durham University offers the Goethe- Institut German exam for different levels of ability.

Why should I take the Goethe Exam?

The Goethe-Institut is the world’s largest provider of German courses and a benchmark for German language teaching and testing. Taking the exam is an ideal way to demonstrate your German skills and proficiency and to assess your language level accurately in an independent exam. The Goethe-Institut certificates are widely accepted and respected as proof of language proficiency. 

Which German levels are offered at Durham?

The German exams offered correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and range from the level A1 (beginners) to C2 for advanced learners of German. A description of each level, exam formats and lengths can be found on the official Goethe-Institut website.

Registration

The next exams will be held on the 5th (A1, B2, C1) and 6th (A2, B1, C2) of June 2025.  Registration will open in February 2025, via the Goethe website. We will provide links in due course.
