Meet Vicki Hinds, Facilities & Housekeeping Manager, St Chad’s College
Tell us about your career to date
I started as a hairdresser many moons ago, then joined a hotel chain but worked my way up to being Exec Housekeeper for Marriott hotels and was based in few different hotels across the north east. After a few years, I decided to join the University as a Housekeeper and then worked my way up to Facilities Manager at St Chad’s College.
Tell us about your current role
I am now Facilities Manager at St Chad’s. I manage housekeeping, reception and maintenance. It is a very interesting role with different challenges every day. As a people person, I enjoy working with lots of different people and the student community.
What are your next steps in your career?
I have no plans to move from my current position as I would like to be at the top of my game before I look for my next challenge. I still have a lot to learn in this position but love the thrill of the chase. I am happy to work with changes and people, which always helps.
What advice would you give women looking to succeed in your area of work?
I would say firstly, it’s all about confidence. Some people say it’s a ‘man’s job’ but I would disagree. I am always up for a challenge, which helps in my role, and enjoy working with my close-knit team.
Do you have any tips for maintaining a healthy work/life balance?
I find if you work hard and play hard, you've got a good balance! I try not to check emails from work when I am off as this isn’t always good for you. Exercise always helps, too!
What are your interests or passions outside of work?
I love to spend time with my family, my dog, Red, and my cat, Dotty! I also love to travel and to socialise with friends.
How do you feel you can make a difference in society or champion change in our community?
I am not sure if I can change the world, but I would like to think I am a compassionate, caring person who’s happy to take on change. I hope this makes a small difference to the community around me.
