This week, our Vice-Chancellor and Warden, Professor Karen O’Brien, and our Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Global), Professor Claire O’Malley have visited Uppsala University, Sweden, to renew the partnership agreement for a further five years.
In addition to signing a new Memorandum of Understanding, the visit has encouraged discussion around the future for the successful bilateral partnership. It was also an opportunity to share updates on key institutional developments and priorities on both sides.
Durham’s global strategy prioritises our engagement with European partners with the aim of increasing opportunities for European research collaboration, staff and student exchanges as well as enhancing our profile in Europe and extending influence over European policy-making. Formalised by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2020, the bilateral relationship with Uppsala is one of Durham’s flagship partnerships in Europe; it dates back many years and builds upon a successful track record of student exchange, a precedent for research collaboration as well as membership of the Matariki and Coimbra Group international networks.
When the strategic partnership was established, it was agreed that the senior leadership teams of both institutions would take part in delegation visits on a regular basis to allow senior colleagues to develop a close working relationship with their counterparts. They could learn more about the partner institution, their values, and ways of working as well as providing the opportunity to explore issues pertinent to the senior leadership at both universities.
A key part of the institutional relationship with Uppsala University to-date has been a mutual commitment to supporting joint research and education projects, which have been selected and funded through a joint Strategic Development Fund.
